Tropical Storm Cindy could deliver 'drenching showers' to Upstate NY

Tropical Storm Cindy could deliver 'drenching showers' to Upstate NY”

A flash flood watch is in place for much of the state until late Friday evening.

A 10-year-old boy from Missouri died Wednesday after a log struck him outside a beachfront condo in Fort Morgan, Alabama, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy rotating up into Tennessee and Kentucky will bring a round of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

"Now is the time to hide from the wind".

The center of the storm hit just south of Lake Charles, Louisiana, the National Weather Center's Hurricane Center said. Friday & Saturday we can expect the threat of some locally heavy downpours. There's a 5 percent chance those storms will carrying damaging winds or hail, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

From East Texas to southern Mississippi, Cindy is expected to drop 3-6 inches of rain and some isolated areas could see up to 12 inches of rain, the National Weather Service said.

Meanwhile, the Gulf Coast was still suffering from the effects of Cindy, a former tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico that crawled ashore early Thursday near the Louisiana-Texas state line.

The storms stretching for hundreds of miles (kilometers) are expected to push river levels higher in coming days as the remnants of a tropical storm cross Tennessee and Kentucky into West Virginia. A boy killed by debris in storm surf off Alabama was the only fatality reported so far in the storm, which spun off tornadoes and caused street flooding in many coastal areas.

Heavy rain was forecast to spread over the Tennessee and OH valleys on Thursday, then move Friday and Saturday into the central Appalachians.

Numerous coastal roads and highways flooded and there were scattered reports of power outages and building damage from wind or water. "We haven't heard of water getting into homes", said Ashley Buller, an assistant in the parish emergency office.

For state officials in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas their greatest concern is flooding. Tuesday will have a few more clouds around with highs around 80 degrees. Several businesses were damaged and at least four people were hurt. The ship made it safely to port Wednesday morning. TD Cindy will weaken as it keeps a northward track through tonight and will begin turning northeastward by Friday morning as it weakens to a post-tropical cyclone. Last June, torrential rains in West Virginia claimed 23 lives and memories of that disaster remained fresh at somber ceremonies honoring the dead. The rain is expected to wrap up by noon Saturday, he said.
