Two Virginia Democrats vying to be face of Trump resistance

Two Virginia Democrats vying to be face of Trump resistance”

Tim Kaine have stuck by the lieutenant governor, whom all three have known and served with for a long time. That is to say, the number or Republicans who came out to vote in today's primary (363K) was dwarfed by the turnout during the 2016 Primary when Trump won with 356K votes with a total of over 1 million Republicans coming out.

Mainstream polling outfits put Gillespie as much as 27 points ahead of Stewart in the months before the election. One poll by Change Research, a new firm, predicted a very close final result and was reported by Breitbart News but ignored by most other news outlets.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting on the GOP side, Gillespie led former Trump state campaign chairman Corey Stewart by just over 4,000 votes out of almost 365,000 ballots cast.

Attorney General Mark Herring is unopposed in the Democratic primary, as is Republican John Adams, a Richmond attorney.

By late Tuesday, statewide tallies showed Northam beat Perriello handily.

The trajectory most everyone expected the primaries in the Virginia governor's race Tuesday night was flipped over. Northam voted for George W. Bush twice (though he later disavowed those votes as "wrong") while Perriello, during his one term as Virginia's representative in Congress, voted for an Affordable Care Act amendment preventing insurance plans from receiving federal subsidies to cover abortion - a decision he also says he regrets.

In the Republican race, Gillespie enjoyed a huge fundraising advantage against Stewart and state Sen. Frank Wagner, struggled to gain traction, despite winning the endorsement of The Washington Post's editorial board.

"Tom Perriello and Ralph Northam, along with Governor Terry McAuliffe, will come together to discuss the importance of building a Virginia that will fight back against the Trump-Gillespie agenda - one that does not discriminate and builds a stronger economy based on progressive values and economic opportunity for all", the Democratic Party of Virginia said in a statement. Gillespie barely defeated Corey Stewart, who was sacked as Trump's state campaign chairman previous year and focused his gubernatorial bid on preserving Virginia's Confederate history. If this becomes a pattern outside Virginia, the GOP will be in deep trouble in 2018 and beyond.

"I am running for governor to take back Virginia from the establishment and political elites in Richmond", conservative Republican candidate Corey Stewart said on his campaign website.

Northam was backed by every statewide Democratic officeholder, while Perriello drew support of Democratic progressives, including U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

The race between Corey Stewart and Ed Gillespie is too close to call.

Northam will face Ed Gillespie in the general election.

His mission to become an elected official, however, began in January of 2014 when he ran for one of Virginia's seats in the U.S. Senate.

But Stewart, who frequently savaged Gillespie during the campaign as an out-of-touch former lobbyist, did not immediately concede the race.

Bashing Trump was important on the Democratic side, but it wasn't everything.

Meanwhile, state Democrats are already crowing about their massive advantage in turnout for the primary - almost 543,000 people voted on the Democratic side, compared to about 366,000 for Republicans. Vogel occasionally bucks her party on votes in the Senate and has said her top priorities would be creating jobs and making Virginia more economically competitive.

Perriello has gained ground on Northam with the help of prominent national Democrats. He's accused Gillespie of trying to mislead voters with unrealistic promises to cut taxes as governor, while calling for a gas tax increase himself to pay for transportation projects.
