WB Govt. honoured with UN Public Service Award for Kanyashree Prakalpaā€¯

The West Bengal government's Kanyashree Prakalpa on Friday was awarded the first prize in United Nations Public Service Award for Asia Pacific here.

The scheme provides an annual scholarship of Rs 500 to all unmarried girl students aged between 13 and 18 and a one-time grant of Rs 25,000 to all unmarried girl students on turning 18, provided their family income is not more than Rs 1.2 lakh per year.

Out of 552 nominations from 62 countries, the United Nations awarded the United Nations Public Service first place victor award in the category on reaching the poorest and most vulnerable through inclusive services and participation to the West Bengal Government for Kanyashree. "Receiving the first prize from the United Nations for Kanyashree is a huge honour and recognition", she tweeted.

"Increased educational attainment, prevention of child marriage and financial inclusion are the scheme's objectives.Kanyashree works towards creating a supportive environment in which girls are encouraged to express their full potential and are free to become architects of their own lives", the United Nations release said. The award was presented at the World Public Service Forum by UN Assistant Secretary General at a ceremony in Hague in Netherlands.

This is not the first award for the Kanyashree Prakalpa.

Since its launch in 2013, the scheme has had a direct impact on school dropout rates among girls in Bengal.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday appealed to the Bengali community here to bring software industries.

The scheme has already enrolled more than four million adolescent girls with the state government transferring a sanctioned some of money directly to the beneficiaries' bank account.
