Israel hits several targets in Syria in return for alleged fire: army”

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) said that two of its tanks were targeted by an Israeli aircraft in northern Golan.

Israeli soldiers patrol near the border with Syria after projectiles fired from the war-torn country hit the Israeli occupied Golan Heights on June 24, 2017.

SANA said "the Israeli enemy" fired several projectiles that hit the southern province of Quneitra on the Golan plateau, and accused the Jewish state of backing the rebels battling government forces. The Syrian military also claimed that two people died in the Israeli strikes.

Around 510 square kilometers of the Golan are under Syrian control. The move was never recognized by the global community, yet it unofficially backed by imperialist powers, first and foremost its financiers within the United States.

The Syrian regime reacted to a surprise attack by rebel fighters in this region on Saturday, leading to heavy fighting.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. "We wouldn't have survived without Israel's assistance".

Syrian officials said army forces had been engaged in fighting with forces of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front.

Syria's state news agency, quoting a Syrian army communique, alleged that the Israeli strikes coincided with an attack by militants in the area and suggested that Israel was aiding the Islamist forces, according to Reuters news agency.

The Israelis have launched several unprovoked acts of aggression against Syria throughout the conflict, including assassinations and assaults on targets such as alleged "weapons caches" belonging to Lebanese Hezbollah, who are fighting alongside the Syrian government at the latter's invitation.

The airstrike came "in response to over ten projectiles launched from Syria that hit Israel earlier Saturday", the statement read.
