2 injured when USAF Thunderbird jet flips over on landing”

While landing at a rain-soaked airport in Dayton, Ohio, on Friday, an Air Force fighter jet skidded off the runway and flipped upside down, trapping two men inside for more than an hour.

Technical Sgt. Kenneth Cordova was released Friday night, according to the Associated Press. It's unclear if the jet's pilot, Capt. Erik Gonsalves, has been released. Sgt. Penelope Reed of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in Dayton says a report was received around 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2017, of a jet off the end of a runway and on its top at the Dayton International Airport.

A safety board will investigate and determine the cause of the mishap.

Heard said the pilot suffered some lacerations and injuries to his leg and the other team member had no visible injuries.

The airport director says the occupants were conscious when taken to a hospital, but any information on their condition would come from the Thunderbirds.

He said Gonsalves is an experienced pilot.

"It is better to wait for the full facts to be examined by a board", Heard said.

"Crowd safety and the safety of our teammates is always our priority", he said.

Hourly shuttle service is also available from the Wright Stop Plaza in downtown Dayton to the air show main gate.

The Greater Dayton RTA will offer continual shuttle service from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force to the show's main gate for $3.

Their conditions were not known and it was not immediately clear what caused the incident, according to NBC affiliate WDTN.
