Brewers lose opener in Atlanta, 5-4

Brewers lose opener in Atlanta, 5-4”

Brandon Phillips homered and drove in two runs, and Arodys Vizcaino earned his first save since last June 26 against the New York Mets.

SunTrust Park is viewed before a baseball game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, June 24, 2017, in Atlanta.

Atlanta Braves' Matt Adams, left, is tagged out by Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia, right, as he dives back to second base during the second inning of a baseball game, Sunday, June 25, 2017, in Atlanta, Ga.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Braves and Brewers are both -110, respectively, on the money line to win today's game. Bravos starter RA Dickey was at the top of his game with the lone run on five hits and a free pass through seven innings pitched.

Atlanta (36-38) has won seven of its last eight and pulled within two games of.500 for the first time since April 29.

A continued upswing by the Braves could make management more willing to keep Phillips past the trade deadline.

Braves's Mike Foltynewicz made five solid innings to lift them for a 5-4 win Friday night over the National League Central leaders the Brewers at SunTrust Park. He had control of his knuckleball as he gave up five hits with one walk while winning his third straight home start. Travis Shaw went yard in the first inning, which was his fifteenth of the year.

"We try not to get into lulls for too long and today was another example of that", Shaw said. Danny Santana replaced him in the first game and Jace Peterson got the start in the second game.

Phillips had two hits, including the homer off Matt Garza (3-4) into the Brewers' bullpen behind the left-field wall.

Jim Johnson worked a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two, for his 15th save. Davies was upset after allowing six runs in the first inning in his previous outing against Pittsburgh and vowed to come out with renewed focus. With Matt Garza set to face R.A. Dickey in the pitching matchup, the over/under now sits at 9.5 runs. He stole second and later scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Hernan Perez.

The Brewers scored in each of the first four innings and finished with more runs than they have since June 14.

Atlanta, which has won three straight, took a 2-0 lead in the first when Phillips homered and Tyler Flowers got an RBI on what could have been an inning-ending double-play grounder.

Brewers: 2B Eric Sogard did not start after being hit by a pitch on his right elbow in Friday night's game. He held Eric Sogard, Thames, Travis Shaw and switch-hitter Nick Franklin to a combined 1 for 9 with two walks and four strikeouts.

Braves: LF Matt Kemp (tightness in left hamstring) was a late addition to the lineup after missing two games. The second baseman showed no signs of the groin issue that caused him to leave Thursday night's game early.
