Burling, Team New Zealand win Race 7 in America's Cup

Burling, Team New Zealand win Race 7 in America's Cup”

Team New Zealand, which has been fast in light wind, needs two more victories to lift the oldest trophy in global sports from two-time defending champion Oracle Team USA, which is owned by software tycoon Larry Ellison. Down Under to watch the races on TV remember the soul-crushing collapse in 2013.

In race eight, the Kiwis were even more dominant, completely outfoxing Team USA in pre-race manoeuvres to take a 14sec lead over the line.

"Full credit to our whole team - we've got an wonderful coaching staff here with the likes of Ray Davies and Murray Jones, really analysing everything they've been doing", he said afterwards. "We always knew it was going to be hard if these guys (Team USA) sail well and we're just excited about the battle ahead", he said.

The wins put the Kiwis back on the front foot after they suffered their first loss of the series in race six early on Sunday (NZT) when Team USA managed an 11sec win.

"These guys sailed better. They made fewer mistakes and they deserved to win two races", Spithill said in a nod to the Kiwis. But we're here. So now it's up to us to respond and react.

"They didn't have many chances to get back in the race", Burling said from on board his catamaran at the finish.

"It's an incredibly shifty day and we tried to consolidate a little bit halfway up that second beat and let them get a bit closer, but it felt like we had pretty minimal risk that whole race". Now Burling could become the youngest helmsman to hoist sailing's greatest prize. Spithill was 30 when he won it in 2010. While Burling steers the boat, the crew is skippered by Australian Glenn Ashby, 39, a multihull wiz who controls the giant wingsail, which performs just like an airplane wing.

The next time the boats came together, Team New Zealand was slightly ahead and on favored starboard tack. Burling then hit the line and kept his catamaran on foils all the way around the course as he sailed to the cusp of what would be an enormous upset.

The tough-talking Australian and his crew will need to find something special to repeat that feat, after making significant changes in the last week to their space-age catamaran to try to match the New Zealand boat's superior speed.

Oracle made up 20 seconds down the sixth leg, but Team NZ had more than enough to see them home for a 5-1 scoreline.
