College professor fired in wake of Fox News appearance”

An African-American professor has been sacked by her New Jersey university after comments she made in defence of Black Lives Matter during an interview with United States network Fox News. She taught communications and pop culture classes as an adjunct, the Newark Star-Ledger reported. While speaking about an "all-black Memorial Day celebration" hosted by a Black Lives Matter group, Durden, who is black, told the host "you white people are angry because you couldn't use your white privilege card" to attend the event.

Durden's rationale for the "one day for black folks to focus on ourselves" hinged on white people having had "white days forever", as she cited the Academy Awards, TV shows, and the long-overdue first black "Bachelorette" by way of example.

During the roughly six-minute interview, Carlson called Durden's comments "hostile, separatist and insane".

College president Anthony Munroe said Friday the Fox News appearance prompted calls from students, faculty and prospective students and their families "expressing frustration, concern and even fear that the views expressed by a college employee with influence over students would negatively impact their experience on the campus".

'The character of this institution mandates that we embrace diversity, inclusion, and unity.

Durden said the school "publicly lynched" her.

Munroe said in his statement that families who contacted the school over Durden's comments expressed frustration and even fear that, as a college professor, her views would have an influence on students.

"I fully believe that institutions of higher learning must provide a safe space for students to explore, discuss and debate, not only academic philosophies, but the harder issues related to living harmoniously and growing together in our communities and as a country", Munroe wrote in a statement announcing the firing.

Durden has not replied to a request for comment from WCBS 880. "I thought when I came home from war, I would be safe." but "I was sacked".

"You don't say the words any more because you know it's politically incorrect - but we have an all white Oscars, movies with all white actors ... it took 11 years to get a black Bachelorette". Instead, "I was sacked".

Her attorney, Leslie Farber, told the Daily News on Sunday the situation amounted to a violation of Durden's right to freedom of speech.

The Associated Press contributed this report.
