Death toll in Pakistan oil tanker accident rises to at least 153”

"At least 123 people were burnt alive and died on the spot while the injured were shifted to the district headquarters hospital and Victoria Hospital in Bahawalpur where the condition of majority is critical", Afzal said, adding that about 50,000 litres of fuel spilled from the oil tanker.

A huge fire broke out after hundreds of local people, mostly villagers, gathered at a capsized oil tanker site on a highway to collect the petrol that spilled out from the ill-fated vehicle.

The hospital, which is treating numerous wounded, added that over 100 people were injured in the explosion, in a statement Sunday.

Dr. Rizwan Naseer, director of Punjab provincial rescue services, said rescuers were collecting the badly burned bodies, many beyond recognition.

He confirmed the death toll at 140 and said 115 burn victims had been shifted to the province's Multan and Bahawalpur city hospitals.

Six cars and 12 motorcycles parked in the vicinity were also severely damaged. "They were screaming for help", he said.

They told the APP that police tried to prevent people from collecting oil, warning of the fire hazard, but the crowds ignored the warnings.

At least 148 people have died, including children, after an oil tanker overturned and burst into flames today on a highway in Pakistan. Reports from the scene suggested the truck had been speeding, while some say it was trying to make a sharp turn when it flipped. The people injured were rushed to the nearby hospital.

Through two hours' efforts, firefighters put out the fire and blocked part of roads and moved all the bodies away.

The devastating accident took place the day before Pakistan celebrates the Eid al-Fitr festival, an end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Haroon-ur-Rasheed, ex-senior police official and an expert to deal with emergency and rescue operations in Bahawalpur, said it was too soon to determine what caused the explosion.

The prime minister's office said the Punjab provincial government had been directed to provide full medical assistance.

The official spokesperson of Pakistan Armed Forces tweeted that helicopters sent for evacuation of casualties to hospitals and burn centers.
