Emmanuel Macron Set for 'Unhealthy Monopoly' in French Elections

Emmanuel Macron Set for 'Unhealthy Monopoly' in French Elections”

Macron also plans to quickly pass a law to strengthen security measures — effectively making the state of emergency permanent, after multiple Islamic extremist attacks in France — and another one that he says will put more ethics into French politics. Interior Ministry data showed 40.75 per cent of registered voters had cast ballots by mid-afternoon, well below the 48.31 per cent at the same time in the 2012 election.

Macron's parties won an overwhelming 32 percent of the popular vote on Sunday.

Mounir Mahjoubi, junior minister in charge of digital affairs, said on BFM television that voters have acknowledged that the first weeks of Mr Macron's presidency "have been exemplary" and "have allowed the French to see there is a path that suits them".

Pollsters projected it could have 10 or fewer legislators - more than the two it had in the last parliament, but not enough to make the National Front the major opposition force Le Pen was hoping for after she advanced for the first time to the presidential runoff vote that Macron won on May 7.

Reformist Mr Macron has pledged to strengthen European Union ties, stabilise public finances, and loosen strictures on business. Returns showed that the National Front would take about 13.5 percent of the vote, while Jean-Luc Mélenchon's leftist France Unbowed Party was expected to win just 11 percent.

According to the first data, candidates of Macron's party are getting 26.6 percent of the votes.

It is all liable to bring a rush of blood to the head, and the greatest danger right now for Macron and En Marche is hubris.

Its chief, Jean-Christophe Cambadelis, confirmed he had been eliminated from his long-held Paris seat, a symbol of his party's stunning demise after five years in power.

But turnout was low, about 49 percent, which analysts said reflected a sense of resignation among Mr Macron's opponents.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe declared he was confident that En Marche! would win a comfortable majority in an election he said would give the assemble "a new face".

The centre-right Les Republicains and allies are likely to form the main opposition bloc, with 21.6 per cent of the vote going to the broad centre-right.

Voters will return to the ballot box for the second round of the legislative poll on June 18, with public opinion experts expecting participation to improve slightly.

While it can be considered a fairly stable rule in politics that parliamentary elections, being "second-order" are less headline-grabbing than presidential, heavily personalized ones, a failure to recognize the importance of the French legislative election will lead to a risky knowledge gap about the conditions that will define Macron's presidency over the next five years. The Republicans and Socialists dominated the house for generations.

Le Pen's presidential defeat triggered a row within the party over what stance it should take on the euro.

Speaking to Xinhua, Madani Cheurfa, secretary general of the Center of Political Research of Sciences Po, said Macron's almost flawless performance since taking office significantly backed his camp's strong performance in the first round of the legislative election.

According to the latest polls, Macron's movement appears in a position to win potentially as many as 400 seats.
