End of an Era: Gabe Pressman, NYC Newsman Dead at 93

Survivors include his wife, Vera, four children, eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. "Gabe Pressman was a television icon who served our viewers for more than 50 years", said Eric Lerner, WNBC president and general manager. He criticized New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in particular for his many "closed press" events.

The New York State Broadcasters Association inductee started working at WRCA radio in 1954.

Pressman then returned to New York, and in 1951 he began anchoring NBC's Shell Oil News, New York's first local television newscast-initial episodes were only five minutes long. In 1947, upon graduating from the Columbia School of Journalism, Pressman worked briefly as a reporter for the Newark Evening News.

Credited as New York's first television journalist, Pressman started his career as a newspaper reporter, moved into radio and arrived at WNBC-TV in NY in 1956, the station said. Continuing his career after many would have retired, Pressman continued to work as a reporter even near his death, covering the St. Patrick's Day parade earlier this year, just as he has traditionally done for decades. "Pressman's reports, interviews, commentaries and hard news stories are featured during various newscasts on the station". He rejoined WNBC in 1980.

A Bronx native, Pressman spent the bulk of his career at WNBC.

In 1956 he joined WNBC/Channel 4, becoming the city's first TV reporter.

For his labors, he earned 11 Emmys Awards as well as the Peabody and George Polk awards. "But I'm part of his legacy, as are so many others who benefited from knowing Gabe".
