Gareth Southgate hails Kane's equaliser as 'huge moment' for England

Gareth Southgate hails Kane's equaliser as 'huge moment' for England”

It has been a while since I've scored for England and it was special.

"We could have had maybe a four versus two going up the field and we could have just killed the game off", said the Hull City defender.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker described that as "the most special moment" of his global career, as he complemented captaining the worldwide side for the first time with that key late goal, and thereby showed exactly the type of leadership Gareth Southgate had asked for in the build-up.

After Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had opened the scoring for England in the 70th minute, Scotland's Leigh Griffiths netted two excellent free kicks in the final three minutes to turn the game on its head, only for Kane to pop up late on to salvage a point for the visitors.

England manager Gareth Southgate says critics of the country's youth development scheme have been proved wrong by the Three Lions' march to the Under-20 World Cup final.

Kane, who was handed the captain's armband for the first time, said: "I would say that is probably the most special moment for me". I have a steady mind and I know my ambitions, I know what I want to do and this team has great ambition.

"To go behind 2-1 out of the blue like that, I think we didn't control the game or put it away".

We come away fairly happy with it and in a good position to qualify for the World Cup.

"You have to expect the unexpected and we were 2-1 down from nowhere but we found another gear". We had a couple of marines come here from the weekend to watch.

The 30-year-old must have totally forgot the actual rules of being a goalkeeper when he picked up a pass from a fellow teammate.

Montenegro and Denmark remain locked on points in the battle for second place after respective victories, 4-1 at home to Armenia and 3-1 in Kazakhstan. They were delighted. It was something I have always dreamed about as most kids do. That's what we've got to show. Subs: James McArthur (for Morrison, 45) 6, Ryan Fraser (for Snodgrass, 66) 5, Chris Martin on for Ikechi Anya (81) 5.

But in the 93rd minute, the captain, leader and (future) legend Harry Kane latched onto the end of Raheem Sterling's diagonal ball to volley home past Craig Gordon.

Having selected a Spurs player to captain the side instead of a Champion of England, England treated observers to a wholly unremarkable first hour.

He added: "I think that is fair (we need to be more clinical)".

Poland stayed six points clear as Lewandowski got on the scoresheet for an 11th consecutive qualifying match.

"It's all to play for and don't rule us out".

England have now gone 35 games and nearly eight years since they last lost a World Cup or European Championship qualifying match.
