Generation game as Federer faces Zverev for Halle title

Generation game as Federer faces Zverev for Halle title”

Roger Federer reflected on a "difficult year" after beating Alexander Zverev to win a ninth Halle title as he provided the flawless platform to build upon for Wimbledon.

Frenchman Richard Gasquet also reached the last four, edging past Dutchman Robin Haase, who had eliminated second seed Dominic Thiem in the previous round, 6-1 3-6 6-1 and looked to be hitting top grasscourt form at just the right time.

However, 21-year-old Khachanov rallied and force two set points which would have taken the match into a decider before Federer, an 18-time Grand Slam victor, closed out the tie-break.

Federer, 35, has yet to drop a set after three matches in Halle this week while his win on Friday took his head-to-head record against Mayer to 8-0, with five of those wins coming on grass.

Zverev is regarded as one of the world's most promising young players and climbed into the top 10 earlier this year after winning three tour titles.

"I was doubting myself a little bit, I must admit, because losing (in the opening) round for the first time in 15 years on grass was always going to shake me a little bit and it did", Federer said.

The Gerry Weber Open 2017 final between Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev is set to start at 1:00pm local time, 4:30pm IST and 12.00pm BST.

Kvitova notches comeback win Petra Kvitova clinched her first title in just her second tournament since returning from a career-threatening hand injury, defeating Australia's Ashleigh Barty 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in Sunday's Birmingham final. In the victory, Zverev won 82 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points.

When Federer won his first Wimbledon crown in 2003, Zverev was a six-year-old boy in Germany.

"It's great to get off to a good start and then remind yourself that you've been playing good tennis all week".

"I thought I was very calm out there, even in hard moments", said Federer, who only returned to action last week in Stuttgart after a two-month break.
