Ken doll gets a major makeover for 2017

Ken doll gets a major makeover for 2017”

Ken's makeover was unveiled 18 months after Barbie, the stereotypical blue-eyed blonde bombshell, was given three new body types - tall, petite and curvy. The expansion of the line introduces consumers to 25 diverse Barbie dolls in the "New Crew", who sport various hairstyles, fashion choices and skin tones on diverse body types.

Mattel is trying to fight falling sales of its iconic doll line at a time when many kids would rather play with an iPad. Photos of the new line show Ken dolls in clothes including skinny ties and plaid shirts and sporting a range of hairstyles including cornrows and a man bun. Launch the gallery to see the new, modernized Ken dolls!

This is the first dramatic change for Ken Carson since the doll was first introduced 56 years ago. Which of the new Kens is your favorite and which of their outfits will be you copying this summer?

Some of the new Ken dolls are available to buy online now, while others will be rolled out over the coming year.

Unclear if #cool, man bun Ken will still want to go party with Barbie, but whatever.

News of Ken's revamping comes more than a year after Mattel rolled out new, improved, and vastly overdue diverse Barbie dolls. "So he was the post-holiday Ken", Ray Cavalluzzi, a Barbie sculptor at Mattel told GQ, noting that the company considered naming the broad body type "hefty" and "husky". However, the company's 2017 first-quarter figures are back down 15 percent.

The El Segundo, California-based company also announced new Barbie looks Tuesday, including one with a almost shaved head and another with an Afro. The dolls cost $9.99 individually, $16.99 in a two pack, or $23.99 for a three pack.
