Kovind files Presidential nomination, vows to uphold dignity of office”

He said India is the largest democracy in the world, where the post of President is "most august". There was no such exercise to solicit his support while the Samajwadi Party has already opposed him.

Media reports said the prime minister was first proposer on Mr Kovind's nomination and union home minister Rajnath Singh second.

On more than three occasions after the poll drubbing, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister has reiterated his desire not to leave the alliance with the Congress and has called it a "friendship for long". However, as the RSS chief didn't show any inclination, the party proposed the name of Swaminathan who too didn't show any interest. "I feel honoured for being nominated as the candidate for the office of president and I thank you all", said Ramnath Kovind.

Though Uttar Pradesh has given the country nine prime ministers, including incumbent Narendra Modi, who is a Lok Sabha member from Varanasi, it will be the first time that the politically crucial state will have the pride of sending someone to the Rashtrapati Bhavan if Kovind is elected. "I belong to this state", appealed Kovind who hails from Kanpur Dehat. "I can not understand why the Congress is opposing him", he said. He added that Kovind would now visit the other states.

By fielding Kumar against NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind, the presidential election is witnessing a Dalit versus Dalit contest.

There were initial fissures in NDA as its oldest ally Shiv Sena, which has 2.34% of the votes, was indecisive and termed Kovind's candidature a vote-bank exercise to woo Dalit votes. Even without Opposition backing, Kovind who has been challenged by the Opposition's joint candidate Meira Kumar, he is confident of sailing through as numbers are staked in his favour.

With the backing of parties outside the alliance like TRS (2 per cent), AIADMK (5.39 per cent), YSR Congress (1.53 per cent) and BJD (2.99 per cent), the NDA's support will cross the half-way-mark to reach almost 63 per cent.

Ram Nath Kovind is heading for an impressive win in the elections to the next President of India. Counting of votes is expected to take place on July 20. "But when the defeat of the opposition candidate is certain they have fielded her as a scapegoat. This clearly shows that it has no commitment to elect leaders from marginalized sections to high offices and had chose to field her purely done as a token exercise".
