Martha crowned 2017 'World's Ugliest Dog' at Sonoma-Marin Fair

Martha crowned 2017 'World's Ugliest Dog' at Sonoma-Marin Fair”

She beat off stiff competition from 13 other mangy mutts - a lot of them the kind of older, smaller dogs who dominate the competition.

From Donald Trump hairdos and tongues that simply wouldn't stay in place they're all being celebrated for their "ruff" appearance.

Lending truth to the adage that every child is attractive to its mum, Martha's owner, Jessica Burkard, said she saw only gorgeousness when she first clapped eyes on Martha at California's Dogwood Animal Rescue Project.

This year, the award went to the competition's oldest participant Moe, a 16-year-old Brussels Griffon-pug mix that had lost its sense of sight and hearing, but maintained a superb sense of smell. She constantly plopped down on her side on the stage, her droopy face spread out when she was supposed to be showing off.

Martha, a 125-pound Neapolitan mastiff, was crowned World's Ugliest Dog for 2017.

The contestants include Monkey, a 6-year-old Brussel Griffon, and Icky, an 8-year-old unknown breed, both of whom were rescued from hoarding.

Martha lumbered away with $1,500, a flashy trophy and a trip to NY for media appearances, all things she could hardly care less about.

The contestants came from across the country and one even came from as far away as England to compete with the top of the low and the title of the most unattractive dog in the world.

Handler Shirley Zindler told The Associated Press that she rescued Martha when the dog was nearly blind, but her sight has been restored after several surgeries.

The dogs were judged on audience reaction, first impressions and "unusual attributes".

Chase, a 14-year-old Chinese Crested-Harke mix, came in third. But for their owners, it was love at first sight. Most of the entrants are older, smaller dogs who win here.
