Mavericks To Decline Dirk Nowitzki's Option, Want New Contract For Star”

The Dallas Mavericks will decline Dirk Nowitzki's $25 million contract option for the 2017-18 season but plan to re-sign him to a new deal next month, according to multiple reports.

The Mavs will instead re-work a deal that gives the team more flexibility moving forward.

When the Mavericks' season ended, Nowitzki made it clear he's comfortable with the direction of the franchise despite the apparent long road Dallas faces to return to contention in the Western Conference, re-iterating yet again that he has no intention of playing for anyone else as he enters historic season No. 20.

The deadline is Thursday for the Mavericks to inform the National Basketball Association of their intentions with the 6-foot-11 forward.

Nowitzki signed a two-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks last summer. The highlight for Nowitzki was reaching 30,000 career points.

His scoring output and field-goal percentage were both his lowest marks since his rookie campaign in 1998-99, when he averaged 8.2 points per game off of 40.5 percent shooting. He's Dallas' all-time leader in-deep breath-points, rebounds, assists, steals, game played, minutes played, field goals made and attempted, 3-pointers made and attempted and free throws made and attempted. I remember one day at practice we're standing on the sidelines on the gym and said, 'Oh man, Dirk, you're about to get to 20 years.

The Mavericks are coming off a 33-49 season.
