More than 100 Islamic State fighters attack Iraqi forces in Mosul

More than 100 Islamic State fighters attack Iraqi forces in Mosul”

An Iraqi refugee camp saw widespread food poisoning this week that killed one child and hospitalized around 200 others, the United Nations refugee relief agency UNBHCR reported Tuesday.

"There are 752 cases of food poisoning and two death, a woman and a child" following a meal on Monday night, Iraqi health ministry spokesman Seif al-Badr said.

Amira Abdulhaliq of the UNHCR said it was unclear when the meals had become contaminated, whether it was during its preparation, packaging, transportation or distribution.

The Hassan Sham camp, which houses around 5,000 families, in al-Khazer on the road linking Mosul and Erbil houses people who have fled the intense fighting between Islamic State and the Iraqi troops trying to recapture the city.

The food was provided by a non-governmental organization for the iftar. He put the number of ill people at 850.

"It is tragic that this happened to people who have gone through so much", said Andrej Mahecic, from the UN's refugee agency UNHCR, which runs the camp and 12 others in the war-torn area with Iraqi authorities.

Irbil police chief Abdulhaleq Talaat said seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident. The camp houses more than 6,235 people.

It was brought from a restaurant in nearby Erbil, breaking a ban on organisations bringing food into the camp, the agency added.

Iraqi army soldiers and volunteer fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units, commonly known by their Arabic name, Hashd al-Sha'abi, have made sweeping gains against the Takfiri elements since launching the Mosul operation on October 17, 2016.

With the loss of the Zanjili neighborhood, the enclave still held by Islamic State in the northern Iraqi city has shrunk to two districts along the western banks of the Tigris river - the densely populated Old City centre and the Medical City, reported Reuters.
