New research finds three ways to reduce dementia risk

New research finds three ways to reduce dementia risk”

How can they protect themselves?

But the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine says the public should be told the evidence is "encouraging" _ though inconclusive _ for those three strategies.

There are three areas that offer some hope, despite the bleak news: cognitive training, blood pressure control and exercise.

Commenting on results of the study, Alan Leshner, CEO emeritus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science said, "At least two of those, we know, are good for a whole lot of other things that people do or that they could suffer from".

A new report suggests that cognitive training, blood pressure management for people with hypertension, and increased physical activity could be beneficial to prevent cognitive decline and dementia. "We should always be open and honest with patients and the general public, so can not tell people that by doing this they will prevent cognitive decline".

"At present, there are no pharmacologic or lifestyle inventions that will prevent mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease", said Dr. Ronald Petersen, an Alzheimer's expert at the Mayo Clinic, who was part of the committee, according to NBC News.

Since then, the understanding of dementia has advanced.

As such, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) called experts to conduct an extensive review on the current material available regarding possible interventions for cognitive decline and dementia. "Can I use certain strategies that will help me process information more quickly and more efficiently that may benefit me later on down the road?" Treating hypertension prevents stroke and cardiovascular disease-both risk factors for AD-and a majority of dementia patients have some sign of these. The first one is to get your high blood pressure under control.

Blood pressure: Evidence suggests lowering high blood pressure through medication, diet and exercise - especially in midlife - might prevent or delay Alzheimer's disease. Exercise is also considered as a stress buster.

Amid the many studies regarding the health benefits of increased physical activity, the experts found that although there is encouraging evidence of its effectiveness against dementia and cognitive decline, there is still now no evidence sufficient enough to support increased physical activity as an effective preventative method.

However, as the team did not take social engagement into effect, their research did not compile enough evidence to show a definitive link between brain games and brain health. That way, it can inform people who are interested in bettering their chances of healthy brain aging.

When funding research on preventing cognitive decline and dementia, the National Institutes of Health and other interested organizations should identify individuals who are at higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia; increase participation of underrepresented populations; begin more interventions at younger ages and have longer follow-up periods; use consistent cognitive outcome measures across trials to enable pooling; integrate robust cognitive outcome measures into trials with other primary purposes; include biomarkers as intermediate outcomes; and conduct large trials created to test the effectiveness of an intervention in broad, routine clinical practices or community settings.

The committee said that none of the evidence was strong enough to justify a public education campaign. However, results from other randomized controlled trials that tested cognitive training were mixed.

How can researchers build a stronger case for prevention? Many controlled studies back up those findings.
