North Korea conducts test of rocket engine that could power an ICBM”

North Korea carried out a test of a rocket engine that could possibly power an intercontinental ballistic missile to take one of its nuclear devices to the U.S. mainland, Rueters and Fox News report.

"A rocket engine was tested today", the USA official said on condition of anonymity, without providing any details.

The North's missile tests present a hard challenge to Moon, a liberal who took office in May and has expressed a desire to reach out to Pyongyang.

"North Korea has blatantly violated worldwide law with their nuclear testing, illicit sales, and the ramping up of their nuclear programme", said Republican Representative Doug Lamborn, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and a leading advocate for missile defence in Washington.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, June 13, 2017. "If you wanted to try to pressure and contain North Korea's ability to earn from these illicit activities, you'd have to also close off its ability to adapt".

"We call on the DPRK to refrain from provocative, destabilizing actions and rhetoric, and to make the strategic choice to fulfill its global obligations and commitments and return to serious talks".

A North Korean soldier defected to the South after crossing the heavily fortified border, a defence ministry spokesman said Saturday, the second soldier to defect this month.

But his distraught family announced on Monday - less than a week after he was released in a COMA - that he had died in hospital in Ohio.

In addition to the missile and nuclear programs, tensions with North Korea have spiked after the death of Otto Wambier, a 22-year-old OH native who was held in North Korea for 17 months and died after coming home unable to speak, see or react to verbal commands. He arrived in OH on June 13, 2017, after being held for more than 17 months.

On condition of anonymity, the official said Thursday the USA believed the drill could be the smallest stage of an ICBM rocket engine.

The test also coincides with intelligence reports that North Korea would test a nuclear device.

A missile to reach the United States mainland is in development but it's not clear what stage the project is at.

North Korea has tested several new missile systems this year in an accelerated effort to strengthen its nuclear weapons and missiles program.

Accordingly, the Trump administration should reduce the military footprint in the Korean peninsula before North Korea possibly agrees to having a temporary freeze on their nuclear and missile tests.
