She sliced the ball hard, kept it wide and low, and denied Muguruza chances to develop pace and rhythm with her elegant groundstrokes.

Muguruza called for her coach, sought to swing the ball around, and eventually just tried to scrap as best she could.

Kvitova, who suffered tendon damage when an intruder broke into her house posing as a gas man, raced into a 5-0 lead within 18 minutes and took the first set 6-1 with an 108mph service victor.

"I came here early and I have put in the hours, and I feel I'm doing something good because I am winning", she said.
