Rainbows, and politics too, at pride parade

Rainbows, and politics too, at pride parade”

Chelsea Manning, the transgender USA army soldier who was imprisoned for leaking classified military information about the Iraq war before being released through a pardon by outgoing president Barack Obama, celebrated her first New York City Pride March on Sunday in front of a float sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

The reason for the arrests were not immediately known, though BuzzFeed reported the arrest came after protesters formed a human chain to block the march.

Pride parades in New York, San Francisco, Minneapolis and other cities are spotlighting resistance to what participants see as new pressure on gay rights. The Seattle Police Department, which put rainbow-colored decals on their patrol cars, said a group of people blocked the parade route for about 30 minutes to hold a sit-in in honor of Charleena Lyles, the black mother slain by city police a week ago.

The NYPD 6th Precinct could not be reached for comment.

Frank Reyes and his husband Paul Brady said they made a decision to march for the first time in many years because they feel the need to stand up for their rights.

NY paradegoers Zhane Smith-Garris, 20, Olivia Rengifo, 19 and Sierra Dias, 20, all black women from New Jersey, said they didn't feel there was inequality in the movement. "I felt like this would be a way to not necessarily rebel, but just my way to show solidarity for marginalized people in trying times", said Hecker, a marketing consultant who lives in suburban Chicago.

But the pride celebrations also face some resistance from within the LGBT world itself.

NY parade-goers Zhane Smith-Garris, 20, Olivia Rengifo, 19 and Sierra Dias, 20, all black women from New Jersey, said they did not feel there was inequality in the movement.

City officials also said there had been no formal application to call a rally and that they only heard of the event through social media. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, the first openly gay person to hold that job, joined the parade with his husband, Michael Shiosaki. The minorities in the movement want their voices heard. "Turkey should protect gay pride rather than banning it".

In Seattle more than 200,000 gathered for this year's parade where the theme was "indivisible".

The Governor's Office in Istanbul said it prevented the demonstration for the security of marchers, tourists and residents.

For more than a decade, Turkish authorities allowed Pride marches to take place.

"The pride celebration is a platform for that dialogue to happen", San Francisco Pride board president Michelle Meow said this week.

The private Dogan news agency reported the detention of seven people who were protesting Pride. Despite that, McPeters said that she feels things for gay people have been getting worse.
