Red Sox retire No. 34 for David Ortiz

Red Sox retire No. 34 for David Ortiz”

"That happening to me today, it's a super honor to be out there hanging with those guys", Ortiz said after the Red Sox retired his iconic No. 34 in a pregame ceremony. He also spoke to the fans for almost ten minutes, receiving a warm welcome.

Bush also lives in Miami, served two terms as governor from 1999 to 2007 and was an unsuccessful candidate previous year for the Republican nomination for president. He can continue to smile knowing his number looks good sitting above Fenway Park.

Ramirez rebounded from his shortest career start with six solid innings, Cameron Maybin doubled home a run and scored another and the Angels held off the Boston Red Sox 6-3 on Saturday night. He also blogs about basketball at Palestra Back and has contributed to Rush The Court, ESPN.com, and USA Today Sports Weekly.

"Felt good. Just I didn't make enough big pitches when I needed to", he said.

"This one, especially playing in this park, gave me a lot of confidence", he said. "Every player that is up there did things that are very, very special for this ballclub and this community".

Red Sox manager John Farrell was ejected by third-base umpire and crew chief Bill Miller after Fernando Abad was called for a balk, scoring a run that made it 5-1 in the seventh.

"When I chose to wear that number, I was proud of wearing it because of the person that I was wearing it for", Ortiz said.

Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Pedro Martinez, Wade Boggs and Jim Rice joined Ortiz on the field before the game, along with family members of the other players whose numbers have already been hung on the Fenway facade.

"I'm (getting) better timing with my warmup (on the road) before the game starts", said Ramirez, who is 1-3 with a 5.10 ERA at home this season.

Ortiz took the field to a raucous ovation. You're not our teammate, you're not our friend. During brief remarks to the crowd, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia turned to Ortiz and said, "We want to thank you for not the clutch hits, the 500 home runs". "When you see Pee-Wee saying some things like that, acting like that, you know it's coming from his heart".

Three World Series trophies glistened in the twilight sun. "I love him so much". Ortiz ranks third in franchise history in doubles (524), extra-base hits (1,023) and RBIs (1,530).

Although the Red Sox have offered Ortiz a spot in the organization, he told reporters that he has stayed away from the team since his retirement to avoid being a distraction.

Ortiz said he never thought about having his number retired by the Red Sox when his career was over, but he always did try to hit them during batting practice.

"Man, the little guy", Ortiz said, referring to Pedroia. "That man never played around, let me tell you".

The Angels took advantage of shortstop Xander Bogaerts' throwing error for an unearned run and that put them ahead 2-1 in the fourth.
