Republican senator has 'very serious' concerns on United States health-care bill

At least five Republican senators have publically opposed the bill.

The lengthy proposal only came out last week, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to begin voting this week.

"I can not imagine that these very fine Republican Senators would allow the American people to suffer a broken ObamaCare any longer!" "We have a few people that are I think, I could say modestly, they're not standing on the rooftops and screaming". Only two Republicans need to defect to kill the bill.

McConnell may be pushing for speedy passage because that disunity is only getting worse.

Another amendment would broaden the ability of those who buy insurance on the marketplace to sock away more money in tax-free Health Savings Accounts to help them pay for their premiums.

Meanwhile, President Trump has sent mixed messages about the health care reform priorities that partly fueled his campaign. Moderates are concerned that the bill places caps on federal Medicaid funding, impacting millions of low-income Americans who rely on the Medicaid programs administered by their states.

Amid the scrum, there are signs Republican opposition is only growing.

Collins, a center-right Republican, allowed for the possibility that the Senate could work late during an open amendment process and said she would withhold a final decision on the bill until the Congressional Budget Office issues an assessment on its effects, which is expected in the coming days.

US Senator Ron Johnson is one of the five senators opposing the bill.

"I think right now - with President [Donald] Trump's shocking upset of the establishment still fresh in our minds - would be a good time for Congress to add a new ingredient to its legislative sausage: a dash of humility". "But I think we're going to get it".

"I think they have, at best, a 50-50 chance of passing this bill", Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY said on ABC.

"The health care bill would be so great if the Democrats and Republicans could get together, wrap their arms around it so that everybody is happy with it", Trump complained on the "Fox and Friends" program, in a previously taped interview broadcast early today. He said Democrats "are doing everything we can to fight this bill because it's so devastating for the middle class".

In the Sunday interview, Trump said, "I want to see a bill with heart". "We don't have too much of a choice because the alternative is the dead carcass of Obamacare".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), speaking on ABC's "This Week", said he believed the bill has a "50-50" chance of passing.

The former presidential candidate doubled down on his claims from last week that "thousands of people will die" if the Senate bill passes, a line that drew ire from the office Republican Sen. "No way", Johnson said on NBC's Meet the Press.
