Romania: president, political parties in talks over new PM”

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) of Romania made a decision to propose acting Economy Minister Mihai Tudose to be the party's nominee for the Prime Minister office, announced the party leader Liviu Dragnea on Monday.

Normally, as party leader, Dragnea would be prime minister, but in 2016 he was convicted of vote-rigging which disqualifies him from holding the post. The Social Democrats withdrew support for Premier Sorin Grindeanu after just six months in office saying he'd underperformed.

Liviu Dragnea said before the CExN meeting that the ruling coalition now had five or six possible names for Prime Minister, and that interior minister Carmen Dan was one of them. However, they've apparently refused the nomination.

"If president Klaus Iohannis accepts the PSD proposal and nominates Mihai Tudose as prime minister, by Thursday evening the new government can be voted in by parliament and can take oath", Dragnea told a news conference aired by local Digi 24.

Despite losing popularity, the Social Democrats still have a loyal base in rural areas, and opposition parties are weak.

Tudose, 50, is the acting Minister of Economy in the government led by Sorin Grindeanu which was dismissed by a motion of censure last week.

Under Romania's constitution, the president must name a prime minister from the political party which has won majority of seats in parliament in elections. He has also completed two master's programs and carried out a doctorate program at the Mihai Viteazu National Intelligence Academy, which is run by the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI).
