Senate leaders try to appease members as support for health bill slips

So far, five Republicans have said they can't support the Senate GOP bill as written.

Over the weekend, senators and their aides were poring over the bill, drafting possible amendments, preparing speeches, and compiling personal stories from constituents who they portrayed as either beneficiaries or victims of the Affordable Care Act. He can win approval only if he limits Republican no votes to just two of the 52 GOP senators, since Democrats solidly oppose the bill.

"There is no way on God's Earth that this bill should be passed this week", Sanders said. Unless those holdouts can be swayed, their numbers are more than enough to torpedo the measure developed in private by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and deliver a bitter defeat for the president. "They're not going to go down after the Republican bill.it's a false sort of over-promising".

House of Representatives minority leader Nancy Pelosi told CBS This Morning on Monday: "We do know that many more people - millions, hundreds of thousands - of people will die if this bill passes".

"We've a very good plan", Trump said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

White House Counsel Kellyanne Conway, appearing on ABC's "This Week", dismissed the notion that the bill did not have enough support to pass, saying Trump "is prepared to have a conversation and discussion, and a negotiation with those senators and others" to ensure the bill passes.

The other three GOP conservatives who say they're against the legislations are Sens.

Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, said his first review of the Senate legislation "raises several red flags for the state".

Warren reiterated her opposition to the Senate bill Sunday, calling it a "monstrosity". But she said it will be "extremely difficult" for the White House to be able to find a narrow path to attract both conservatives and moderates.

"The bill's defenders will say it repeals Obamacare's taxes and reduces Medicaid spending growth".

But many Republicans believe that survey data show voters will punish anyone who doesn't substantially alter Obamacare, making passage of some reform imperative.

On Friday, Nevada Senator Dean Heller became the fifth Republican senator to publicly come out against the legislation.

The American Childhood Cancer Organization, a charitable group formed by parents, is mobilizing a small army of grass-roots lobbyists with the message that the Senate Republican bill, with its deep cuts in Medicaid, "will threaten the lives of children battling cancer".

Louisiana's senators haven't taken a public position on the Senate proposal. The bill proposes phasing out federal funding to states that had been used to expand the program under the Obama administration.

Although it won't be made clear exactly how the Senate health care bill will impact those on Medicaid until the CBO scores the bill, there's little doubt that, as with the House' plan, millions of people stand to be affected.
