North Korea has tested several new missile systems this year, including a powerful midrange missile that experts say could one day reach targets as far as Hawaii or Alaska. Friday's missile test is the fourth of six evaluations that will take place "before official weaponization" of the Hyunmoo-2, according to The Korea Herald.

After two more tests, the 800-kilometer range ballistic missile system will be deployed as a crucial part of South Korea's so-called Kill Chain system, which is supposed to allow pre-emptive strikes on North Korea's missile sites at times of imminent threats.

In addition to developing its own missiles, South Korea is now protected from a North Korean missile strike by a U.S. THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) missile battery, which was brought into the country in March and deployed in the southeast. "It's true that some officials expressed concerns that the president attending the event might end up provoking North Korea", Park said.

Moon told Reuters in an exclusive interview on Thursday that strong new sanctions would be needed if the North conducted a new nuclear test or an intercontinental ballistic missile test and that he planned to call on Chinese President Xi Jinping to play a greater role in reining in Pyongyang's arms program.

The test follows about a dozen missiles launches this year, as well as three engine tests in March.

USA spy satellites have picked up new activity at North Korea's underground nuclear test site, CNN reported on Tuesday.

China's top diplomat met Trump at the White House on Thursday, where he said Beijing was willing to keep working with Washington to defuse tensions on the Korean peninsula, China's foreign ministry said.

The head of the US Defense Intelligence Agency told Congress last month that North Korea, if left unchecked, was on an "inevitable" path to obtaining a nuclear-armed missile capable of striking the US mainland.

Earlier this week, Seoul's new sports minister, Do Jong-hwan, suggested forming a joint Korean team in women's hockey and holding skiing events at North Korea's Masikryong resort during PyeongChang 2018. ICBMs have a minimum range of about 5,500km, but some are created to travel 10,000km or farther. It also conducted two nuclear tests a year ago as it pursues development of a long-range nuclear missile that could reach the USA mainland.

"We have come to a stalemate when it comes to North Korea", she said in response to a question from news.com.au.

NORTH Korea has indicated it is open to a moratorium on its nuclear and ballistic missile testing, in unusually frank comments from one of the country's ambassadors. The previous intercept test, conducted in February, had been successful.
