The Blue Jays And Mariners Were Like Sweet Children Out There

The long ball dependency was in evidence again Saturday in Toronto's 4-2 win over the Mariners when the Jays registered just four hits.

Toronto is 13-6 over its past 19 games, is 31-32 for the season and within a game of.500 for the third time since the opening week. "He's got really good stuff and in my opinion, he's probably one of the tougher lefties in the game".

"I don't know if it will work forever but, right now, it's working". By the time I realized it, (Bautista) was already there. It also marks the end of the Mariners' longest homestand of the season: 11 games; They are 7-3 with one game to go. Darwin Barney would finish today's game 0 for 3 and in the eighth would be pinch hit for by Ryan Goins who would promptly strike out with his attempt to provide offense. We only managed 4 hits, but 3 of them were home runs. Offensively, Kevin Pillar leads the Blue Jays with 64 hits and 17 RBI while Justin Smoak and Kendrys Morales have combined for 116 hits and 76 RBI.

"That always helps", Jays manager John Gibbons said. Scherzer struck out four through the first three innings, putting him at 1,999, then struck out Nomar Mazara to lead off the fourth.

Happ, the 20-game victor from a year ago, had eight strikeouts in six shutout innings for his first win of 2017 and, more importantly, felt like he's ready to resume an important role in the Jays rotation.

Happ, the ex-Mariner (naturally), struck out eight in six shutout innings, looking like the guy who was 20-4 wth a 3.18 ERA past year, instead of a guy wobbling back from a forearm strain. That is surprising with only winning three of the six games and having the strong lineup of Toronto in town.

Starter Ariel Miranda wasn't almost as sharp as he was on Sunday in his complete-game shutout, but was still pretty good.

Following the 2014 season, the Seattle Mariners waived Justin Smoak, allowing the Toronto Blue Jays to pick him up at nearly no cost.

Paxton was trying to become the eighth starting pitcher in club history to win his first six decisions of the season, but was off from the start. He then stole second base easily two pitches later.

Paxton spent most of May on the disabled list, and in three starts since returning to the rotation he's allowed seven runs in 14 1/3 innings (a 4.40) earned-run average.

"What I took away was that the separation between the two- and four-seamer was big today, just so they couldn't stay on one of those", said Happ. And the rejuvenated Jays first baseman didn't disappoint, blasting his team-leading 18th out of the park to give the Jays a two-run lead in the top of the ninth.

He allowed as to how he may have eased off the intense rehab routine that allowed him to pitch well in his first game back five days ago from a five-week layoff due to a forearm strain. One that bodes for well for a team that needs many more starts like this one from him. Haniger had been out since April 26 with a strained oblique after a scorching start to the season.

Justin Smoak might just turn into a huge bargain for the Blue Jays, as he makes $4.125 million this season and next year, with a team option worth $6 million in place for the 2019 Major League Baseball season. What seems certain is only an injury gets Leonys Martin a summons from Triple-A Tacoma.

Blue Jays: After an off day on Monday, the Blue Jays open a series at home with Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Estrada has had a pair of rough outings after an impressive start to the season. Marcus Stroman lasted seven innings in the win, allowing six hits with six strikeouts.
