Trump labeling House health care bill 'mean' frustrates GOP

Republican Senator Joni Ernst is urging GOP leaders in the Senate to embrace "transparency" and give the public a chance to review the Senate GOP's alternative health care bill before the senate votes on the plan.

Louisiana state senators refused to accept a pared-down version of a $28 billion-plus state operating budget that House Republican leaders proposed, as negotiations sputtered over a compromise on next year's spending plan with Thursday's end of the legislative session nearing. "It's a very big transfer of wealth - probably one of the greatest in a short time in recent American history - where you have millions of people across the country who have health insurance under the Affordable Care Act and are protected under Medicaid and Medicaid expansion, and you're taking that away", King said.

"We believe we all owe it to our constituents to meet to discuss your potential legislation that would profoundly impact so many American lives", Mr. Schumer, New York Democrat, wrote to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Republicans don't even have the guts to allow it to go to a committee, where we can have an open hearing, where questions could be asked.

"The Senate I'm sure will follow suit and get a bill across the finish line this summer that will be great health care for Americans". Not a single Democrat has said they will support the measure.

The Congressional Budget Office projected that the AHCA as passed by the House would cause an additional 23 million Americans to become uninsured by 2026.

Senate Republican leaders say the bill is still a work in progress, and they have not said exactly how their bill will differ from the one approved last month in the House. The move was a jarring shift after years of promises from House GOP leaders to slow down major legislation and post all bills online several days before a vote. "Senator Grassley will study the final Senate bill when it's ready". Because he knows the bill will be unpopular, he's keeping it hidden, even from many of his own members. Graham said, "I just think the House had to pick up the Freedom Caucus votes and they want to control the escalating cost of Medicaid. [The Senate's] actions are giving me a death wish", said James St. Jacques, Medicaid consumer.

MacArthur's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's description of the bill MacArthur helped resuscitate. But Price said "it's not a yes or no answer".

Republicans in recent weeks have said they hoped to vote on a health bill before the July 4 congressional recess, but some have voiced uncertainty as to whether that will happen.

Some Republicans in the House argued that the bill amounts to a tax increase.

"The Senate is not a place where you can just cook up something behind closed doors and rush it for a vote", said Sen. A Kaiser Health tracking poll in May found 55 percent of respondents have an unfavorable view of the House bill versus 31 percent who view it favorably, and most polls have found a similarly negative reaction.
