Uber Chief Executive Travis Kalanick steps aside indefinitely

Uber Chief Executive Travis Kalanick steps aside indefinitely”

Mr Kalanick told employees about his decision in a memo on Tuesday.

Upon his announcement, former Attorney General Eric Holder and his law firm Covington and Burling released their recommendations to Uber, after conducting an independent investigation. However there would be no clear replacement for him due to so many leadership employees leaving recently.

BuzzFeed scored a copy of the email Kalanick sent, which reportedly reads, "The ultimate responsibility, for where we've gotten and how we've gotten here rests on my shoulders". The report recommended that Uber hire a chief operating officer to work with the CEO and who has a background in diversity and experience dealing with "complicated labor and operational structures".

The company has also been reported to have been caught up in cases of intellectual property theft concerning their self driving auto service which has already resulted in the termination of Anthony Levandowski, the head of Uber's self driving service and faces a federal investigation for using a program called Greyball, which allowed Uber to evade law enforcement in areas where it is illegal.

Uber also announced Monday that it was adding a new member, Nestle executive Wan Ling Martello, to one of several empty seats on the board. The board also called for appointment of a senior executive to oversee implementation of Holder's recommendations.

On Tuesday, a report by Holder containing recommendations for improving the company were made public. Coleman should also communicate regularly with employees and address issues of both diversity and inclusion. That included a search for a COO who might do for Kalanick what Sheryl Sandberg did for Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook. These investigations ultimately led to the termination of more than 20 Uber employees. It means the company must interview at least one woman and one underrepresented minority for key positions.

According to a board representative, at the latest meeting, Uber vowed to adopt all of the team's recommendations, and will be unveiling these policy changes to their employees within the coming weeks.

"If we are going to work on Uber 2.0, I also need to work on Travis 2.0 to become the leader that this company needs".

This should include a ban on drinking alcohol during "core" work hours and prohibiting "consumption of non-prescription controlled substances during core work hours, at work events, or at other work-sponsored events". A spokesperson said Uber will now offer free dinner at 7 p.m. on weekdays; the dinner time was previously 8:15 p.m. It said romantic or intimate relationships between employees that report to each other should be prohibited.

The internal probe was based on a litany of allegations made by former Uber engineer Susan Fowler, including that she was discriminated against based on her gender and that the company ignored her repeated complaints of sexual harassment at the hands of her supervisor, basing it on the fact that he was a "high performer".
