World's Ugliest Dog 2017 Will Melt Your Heart

World's Ugliest Dog 2017 Will Melt Your Heart”

Martha is a three-year-old Neapolitan Mastiff and will hold the title until next year's contest.

She told Zindler she could offer Martha 11 acres at her family's home, where Martha could befriend Blue, explore the banks of a lake and rest underneath apricot and cherry trees. "She bosses the other dogs around and makes sure all guests are suitably slimed on arrival".

She waddles away with US$1,500, a flashy trophy and a trip to NY for media appearances, all things she could hardly care less about. Several surgeries were conducted and Martha can now see again, her handler Shirley Zindler said. And a world champion.

Martha's win is especially significant since it breaks the stranglehold on ugliest dog titles that has been held for years by the Chinese Crested breed (cross a large, mange-ridden rat with a bat and a paralysed tongue and you've got the picture).

The Neapolitan mastiff had been taken in by the charity after her previous owner tried to sell her on United States listing site Craigslist. She was a favorite of the Northern California crowd from the start, often plopping down on her side on stage.

The judges at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair in California agreed, putting Martha on top of the pile of aesthetically challenged pooches competing for the "World's Ugliest" crown.

In a competition that is usually dominated by the hairless, old and tiny, it was the young and massive who took this year's price.

Although, some may think it's cruel to enter a dog into such a contest, Zindler says it's actually all about promoting rescuing and adopting dogs that aren't "traditionally attractive". Sweepee Rambo, a blind Chinese Crested dog, won the annual World's Ugliest Dog contest.
