Hinduism is the fastest growing religion in Australia”

The census, which was taken in August previous year, came under scrutiny after a cyber-security threat forced the closure of the website.

A typical Sydney rent was $440 per week, with the median Melbourne rent $350 a week.

The latest census data which had a 95% response rate, most Australians didn't identify with a religion, a first for the country which had been predominantly Catholic.

People with no religion now make up 7 per cent more of the population than Catholics and more than double the number of Anglicans, Australia's largest religious group until 1986.

Mandurah also revealed steady population growth, adding 13,442 people between 2011 and 2016, an increase of 16.1 per cent.

New South Wales remains the nation's most populous state and Sydney, the nation's biggest city, but the data shows that Melbourne is set to take the title of Australia's largest city in the years to come.

The median personal income in Australia has risen to $662 a week, from $577 a week in 2011, with the Australian Capital Territory - the main home of the commonwealth's public servants - clocking the highest median income in the country, at $998 a week.

They make up only 12 per cent of the population of Tasmania. Four percent were aged 85 or over, also a record.

Half-a-century after Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders were first legally counted in the census, the median age has grown by three years, from 20 to 23.

In a statement released on Tuesday, AFA president Kylie Sturgess said that the organization is hopeful that Australian politicians will see the population that marked "no religion" as a serious force in the country's political landscape.

It said that of all Australian residents, just more than a quarter of people (26 per cent) said they were born overseas, with England remaining the most common country of birth other than Australia.

Estimates of the size of the indigenous population before Europeans arrived in Australia in 1788 range from 315,000 to more than one million people.

Despite a record number of Australians not owning their household, the number of homes left unoccupied rose 0.5 per cent since 2011.

At home, 72.7 per cent of people speak only English, 2.5 per cent speak Mandarin, and 1.4 per cent speak Arabic. "We will be making our opinions known, and there's power in numbers".

Sydney saw the highest number of renters spending more than 30 per cent of their income on rent with the figure reaching 14.2 per cent, while Melbourne jumped from 9.7 to 11 per cent.

Census 2016 data reveals the median total weekly family income is $2091 in the Brisbane local government area compared with $1470 outside south-east Queensland.

In 2016, 31 per cent of Australians owned their homes outright, 34.5 per cent owned them with a mortgage and 30.9 per cent rented.

Australia continues to live up to the reputation of being one of the world's most culturally diverse nations, after the Australian Bureau of Statistic (ABS) released the results of the nation's controversial first online census on Tuesday, China's Xinhua news agency reported.
