With no 'Idol,' Fox working on new singing competition”

ABC doesn't have a firm premiere date for Idol, saying that it will return for the 2017-2018 season. Variety is reporting that the network has put a new series from Israeli producer Armoza Formats into development, one that will feature a similar aesthetic and structure to reality programs now on the air. The victor will be chosen in the finale. The show works this way: the four finalists are chosen in the first episode, and then new contestants come on each week to challenge them and "steal" one of their slots.

Israel's Armoza Formats is working on the new competition with Fox, Variety says.

Armoza had shopped the premise internationally, and Fox quickly showed interest - particularly after it was made official that American Idol, a 15-year Fox flagship canceled two years earlier, would jump ship for a reboot at ABC.

But Fox struggled to develop new series to compensate for the loss of Idol, which still ranked among broadcast's higher-rated shows through its final season.

While the show is being given the title The Final Four for some worldwide markets, it will not have that name in the USA due to the NCAA's tournaments that are associated with that title. Katy Perry is now the only judge confirmed so far, though the network is reportedly close to inking a deal with Ryan Seacrest to return as host. "The Voice" is set to welcome "American Idol" vets Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson as coaches next season. The most recent effort, ABC's Boy Band, has fared poorly since its premiere in June, averaging a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.8 million total viewers according to Nielsen live-plus-same day numbers.
