Flight MH17 suspects to be tried in Netherlands”

People suspected of shooting down the MH17 flight in 2014 can be prosecuted in the Netherlands, under Dutch law, reports the NOS on Wednesday.

The criminal investigation is still ongoing.

The ministry announcement on behalf of the countries involved in the investigation - Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine - did not include the names of suspects.

Former security and justice minister Ard van der Steur had told Dutch parliament in a briefing last October that it should prepare for a prosecution in the Netherlands.

The investigation was also hampered by "a great deal of disinformation and attempts to discredit the investigation".

Of the 283 passengers and 15 crew members who died when the flight was shot down on July 17 2014, 196 people were Dutch nationals.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry did not identify eventual suspects to prosecute.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko vowed Wednesday that Kiev "will contribute and assist the Netherlands as much as possible to assure the prompt punishment of those responsible".

The Head of State wrote this on his Facebook page.

"That is why I believe in (the) fairness, impartiality and objectivity of the Dutch justice" system, he added.

The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) that conducted the worldwide investigation also determined that the Buk missile system had been brought into Ukraine from Russian Federation shortly before the MH17 was shot down and then smuggled back to Russian Federation shortly afterward.

It added that the Buk was brought to Ukraine from Russian Federation and transferred back after the missile launch. Investigators a year ago said they had pinpointed 100 people they want to speak to who are believed to have been involved in transporting the Buk missile launcher or its use.
