NYPD Officer Shot In The Bronx

NYPD Officer Shot In The Bronx”

He was shot and killed by police about a block away, Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.

A police officer was shot and critically injured early Wednesday while sitting in a police vehicle in the Bronx, in what the police commissioner called an "unprovoked attack".

The female police officer, a 12-year veteran assigned to the New York Police Department's 46th Precinct's Anti-Crime unit, was taken to a Bronx area hospital and was listed in "extremely critical condition", according to the NYPD.

While her partner radioed for help, other officers ran outside and fired at the suspect.

A suspect was shot dead at the scene by police, according to the New York Post.

They confronted the suspect, who then took out a gun, and the officers fired at him and killed him, O'Neill said.

A person, described by police as a bystander, was also struck by a bullet and transported to the hospital, police say. That person is in stable condition. Police say he was on parole for a robbery in Syracuse, NY.

The NYPD has identified the suspect as 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, of Manhattan. "After this shocking and sudden attack, her fellow officers came to her aid immediately". Shock surrounded the neighborhood after just celebrating the Fourth of July.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
