European Parliament Calls for Turkey Accession talks to be Suspended”

He said Turkey cared about the decisions made by EU leaders not those made by lawmakers, adding: "What we care about is the opinions of the leaders of the European Union, opinions of the European Union's top administration".

He added Turkey's reforms would be "implemented unchanged".

The European Commission and EU member states have previously rejected calls to formally suspend talks as Turkey's accession process is already effectively "in limbo".

Turkey's main opposition party leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, on Friday called for EU-membership talks to be maintained.

The July 6 vote came as EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn visited Istanbul for talks with Celik and other Turkish ministers.

Turkish EU affairs minister, Omer Celik, dismissed the vote as "a politically motivated decision" which was "sabotaging relations" between the bloc and Ankara.

The European Commission shares the European Parliament's concerns over Turkey's constitutional reform stipulated by April's referendum and enshrined in the latest EU resolution, a source within the Commission told Sputnik on Thursday.

GETTYMEPS in the European Parliament approved a resolution calling for accession talks to be halted

President Tayyip Erdogan is attending the G20 summit in Hamburg, where he will attend various sessions.

But Turkish officials have rejected the resolution.

They condemned the coup attempt and expressed their solidarity with the people of Turkey, but at the same time expressed regret at the Turkish government's disproportionate response, resulting in large-scale dismissal of civil servants, the closing of media outlets, the arrest of journalists, judges and human rights defenders, and the closure of schools and universities.

"We need to work together in the future and ensure that the report, which is submitted to votes, calls for the deepening of EU-Turkey relations in key areas of joint interest".

European Union lawmakers noted that 2016 was a "difficult year" for Turkey, whose people have experienced an influx of of Syrian refugees, several terrorist attacks and a failed coup in July.

Accession negotiations started in 2005, but until Turkey agrees to apply the Additional Protocol of the Ankara Association Agreement to Cyprus, eight negotiation chapters will not be opened and no chapter will be provisionally closed.
