Beijing helps to press Trump over withdrawal from Paris climate accord”

"We take note of the decision of the United States of America to withdraw from the Paris agreement", the communique reads.

Andrew Light of the World Resources Institute said this was the most interesting line in the text, indicating it stood in "stark contrast" with Trump's arguments about pulling out in which he claimed, "fulfilling our commitments to Paris would hurt our economy".

Still, outside experts and climate advocates say any broad show of support for Paris and Germany's climate action plan will be a reminder that Trump is increasingly on his own when it comes to climate change.

World powers lined up against U.S. President Donald Trump on climate change, reaffirming their support for worldwide efforts to fight global warming.

Perhaps as a way to emphasize global unity - minus the United States - Macron announced there would be another climate summit in Paris in December to mark the two-year anniversary of the climate accord.

"Yes, I know President Trump is trying to get out of the Paris agreement, but he doesn't speak for the rest of America".

The group added new elements, however: an acknowledgment that trade must be "reciprocal and mutually advantageous" and that countries could use "legitimate trade defense instruments" if they are being taken advantage of.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has also put climate change on the agenda of the meeting, despite her clashes with Mr Trump on the topic.

"Many things have happened that have led to trade imbalances", Trump said, adding that he wants a new global trade framework that would be "equitable" and "reciprocal".

Still, Merkel offered a verbal rebuke of Trump's trade positions. Other countries resisted, but they finally agreed to a special paragraph for Trump to see the US pledge to help other countries access and use fossil fuels more cleanly and efficiently. The Trump administration adamantly advocates tackling what Washington deems as unfair trade practices, including currency FX manipulations and non-tariff limitations on imports and exports used by certain nations that formally uphold the free trade idea. He has focused on trade relationships where other countries run large surpluses with the US, meaning they sell more to USA consumers than they buy from American companies.

Instead, diplomats said, both countries are expected to join other nations in endorsing the Paris deal and backing the action plan - unless the tone of the talks shifts dramatically in the coming days.

"The Paris agreement on climate change is an important consensus that doesn't come easily and must not be given up easily", President Xi Jinping said.

The president has said trade must be fair as well as open and must benefit American companies and workers.

"It comes at a cost of eroding USA leadership", said Eswar Prasad, a senior professor at Cornell University.

President Barack Obama made it official in 2016, bypassing Congress to avoid a rejection of the deal by members who do not believe in the science behind climate change.

It confirms that the U.S. is committed to lowering its emissions, so long as this is compatible with economic growth.

G-20 agreements are statements of intent and rely on governments themselves to follow through.

It added that U.S. had affirmed its "strong commitment to an approach that lowers emissions while supporting economic growth and improving energy security needs".

The G-20 comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, France, Britain, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the USA and the European Union.
