Celtics to sign Aron Baynes to one-year contract

Celtics to sign Aron Baynes to one-year contract”

According to The Vertical's Shams Charania, the Boomers big man has agreed to a deal worth $4.3 million with the Boston Celtics for a year.

Baynes offers a pinch of everything from rebounding, to shot blocking and scoring (excluding three-point shooting) rated 11.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per 36 minutes last season (link).

The Boston Celtics needed to address the interior after losing Amir Johnson, Kelly Olynyk and Tyler Zeller in free agency, and it appears they did just that with their latest reported acquisition.

In his two years, Baynes, 30, had become one of the locker room leaders for the Pistons, spearheading a team meeting last season when he sensed things were going awry early in the season.

It remains to be seen how the C's will use Baynes. However, coach Brad Stevens likes to experiment with his lineup so expect him to insert Jae Crowder into the power forward spot and Baynes as backup to starting center Al Horford. Boston traded Avery Bradley to Detroit last week in order to generate the necessary cap space to sign Hayward to a maximum-contract salary that starts at $29.7 million for the 2017-18 season.

Aside from Baynes, the Celtics also have Ante Zizic and Guerschon Yabusele as frontcourt reserves.

While the Celtics have a bunch of players capable of playing as undersized 4s, the team is thin on pure centers.
