Germany starts moving planes from Turkey's Incirlik Air Base

Germany starts moving planes from Turkey's Incirlik Air Base”

Germany began to pull its troops from Incirlik air base in Turkey today, where they were supporting worldwide operations against Islamic State.

A German defense ministry spokesman said on Sunday that the withdrawal from the Incirlik base in southern Turkey΄s Adana province was the next step in one of several bilateral disputes between Germany and Turkey.

In the meantime the necessary material was to be moved to a new air base in Jordan, where the planes are scheduled to be deployed by October.

Jordan's Al-Asrak base is also much smaller than Turkey's Incirlik and must first be modified to meet the needs of the German air grouping.

As Spiegel writes, "Tornado" will be withdrawn from Turkey until the end of July.

Six German Tornado surveillance jets and a tanker aircraft have been stationed at Incirlik Air base since 2015 as well as its refueling and reconnaissance aircraft.

The conflict between Berlin and Ankara dates back to May, when Turkey blocked a group of German lawmakers from visiting servicemen stationed at Incirlik, which has been used by Berlin to carry out reconnaissance flights as part of the global operation against against the ISIL terrorist organization.

Ankara became angry when Berlin had previously banned Turkish politicians from campaigning in Germany ahead of Turkey's constitutional referendum citing security concerns.

The process of transferring military aircraft and personnel from the Turkish airbase to a new location in Jordan will result in the suspension German participation within the US-led coalition for at least two or three months, the German Defense Ministry said earlier. Those in question reportedly hold diplomatic passports and were stationed in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation facilities in Germany at the time of the attempted coup.
