Interior Ministry kills 6 militants in Asyut, IS ideologists”

Egypt's Ministry of Interior said on Monday that police have killed six "terrorists" affiliated with the Daesh militant group during a raid on an abandoned apartment building in Upper Egypt's Assiut governorate.

The militants were using the hideout as "an organisational base and to prepare to carry out a series of terrorist operations within the southern provinces", said the ministry. When the forces approached the militant's apartment they were met with open fire. The ministry is yet to reveal their identities.

On Saturday, the Ministry of Interior announced a similar attack with police forces, in which they killed 14 militants in the city of Ismailia.

Dairut is known to have been a stronghold of conservative Islamists in the 1990s, who were involved in bloody clashes with police forces during the reign of former President Hosni Mubarak.

The police found a bomb, five automatic weapons, ammunition, military uniforms, and "educational publications containing the concepts and slogans of the (IS) group", it added. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for attacking a remote Egyptian army outpost in the Sinai Peninsula with a suicide vehicle bomb and heavy machine gun fire.

The jihadists have been increasingly targeting Christians in their campaign as well.

The extremist group claimed an attack Friday on a remote army outpost in the northern Sinai that killed 23 soldiers.
