Japan island that bans women is Unesco Heritage site

Japan island that bans women is Unesco Heritage site”

That came one day after Hoh Xil in northwest China's Qinghai Province was put on the list as a World Natural Heritage site at the ongoing 41st session of the World Heritage Committee in Krakow, Poland.

The shrine was used to conduct prayer rituals for Japan's exchanges with other Asian lands as well as the safety of maritime trips during the fourth to ninth centuries.

The island's ancient rules regarding entry have been preserved with tight restrictions on the number of visitors, the Japan Times said.

It is 35 miles out at sea, little more than a half a square mile in area, and is strictly off limits to women and to men unwilling to strip naked before they step foot there. "It is meant to protect women, the birth-giving gender", he added.

With 22 world heritage sites, Iran is ranked first in the Middle East and 11th worldwide.

They also include sites rich with cultural history, including Japan's island of Okinoshima, an ancient ritual spot with well-preserved archaeological sites; Greenland's Kujataa, a sub-arctic farming landscape that bears witness to the successful cohabitation of Norse hunter-gatherers and Inuit farming communities; and Taputapuātea, a site on the Polynesian island Ra'iatea thought to be the last part of the globe settled by humans.

Thousands of gold rings and other valuable items have been found there.

Okitsugu shrine of the Munakata Taisha at Okinoshima island, some 60 kilometres from Munakata city, Fukuoka prefecture.

Following the Unesco preliminary review panel's recommendation against the four sites, Japanese officials explained the interconnectedness of each site to representatives of the countries on the World Heritage Committee, according to the officials.

Kuwaiti representative was the second speaker to support selection of Yazd; "given the historic structure and magnificent brickwork of this city, it is bound to enter the UNESCO World Heritage List", he underlined.

Okinoshima joins the likes of Stonehenge, and Australia's very own Great Barrier Reef and Kakadu National Park.
