More commuter misery as rail strikes continue across the north west

More commuter misery as rail strikes continue across the north west”

The strike - starting at 12.01am today (Monday 10 July) - comes days before voting ends in a ballot of train drivers organised by the ASLEF union about whether they should also strike.

Rail services in Yorkshire are being disrupted in the third day of industrial action today.

Northern said it was doing all it could to keep customers on the move, and would run more than 40 per cent of its timetable.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: "Northern are proposing to de-staff trains completely on a multitude of routes, while at the same time ending the guarantee of on-train assistance on numerous other services".

Great Northern
Great Northern Great Northern trains were suffering delays of up to 40 minutes after a car hit a level crossing

"Our amended timetables have been developed to provide the best possible cover to best meet the needs of our customers", she said. Trains will run from 7am to 7pm, but some stations will be closed.

Merseyrail said it operated about a 20% service on Saturday, with a similar number expected today. Such a list is bitterly opposed by the RMT in particular, which has called on Southern to suspend the exceptions for six months, without success.

The RMT claims that proposals for more DCO are part of a "wider attack on rail services" and that it is concerned about a threat to safety, although operators and the Department for Transport continue to maintain that more DCO is justified and does not pose a risk. This will also make it harder for people with disabilities to travel on the railways.

Mr Grayling is making his decision after an application to the High Court by the Association of British Commuters.
