North Korea can strike Alaska. What can the United States do?”

A Pentagon spokesman says the long-range missile that North Korea test-launched Tuesday was a type not previously seen by US analysts.

"I do not believe this capability in itself brings us closer to war", Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon.

Lt. Gen. Thomas Bergeson, deputy commander of the U.S. Forces Korea, said the bombers and Korean fighter jets are "just two of many lethal military options at our defend and to preserve the security of the Korean Peninsula and region".

A day earlier in Poland, Mr. Trump said the USA was considering "some pretty severe things" in response to North Korea's actions.

Pyongyang warned it would be a "piece of cake" to destroy "gangster" South Korea, state media reported Thursday, as it raged against Seoul for a joint missile drill with the U.S. following its landmark intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. "seeks only the peaceful denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and the end of threatening actions by North Korea".

Dana White, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said that the commitment to US allies is "ironclad" and that the United States is prepared to use "the full range of capabilities at our disposal against the growing threat from North Korea".

As a longtime ally of North Korea and its top trading partner, China is seen by many - including the Trump administration - as the key to a solution on the Korean Peninsula. He said any country helping North Korea militarily or economically, taking in its guest workers or falling short on Security Council resolutions "is aiding and abetting a risky regime".

"A simple misjudgment or mistake may lead to the outbreak of a nuclear war and that, in turn, is sure to lead to a new world war", it added.

"The North Korean launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4 is a very serious escalation and provocation and also an affront to the United Nations Security Council resolutions, " he said.

Two U.S. air force bombers released inert weapons Friday on a training range in South Korea.

Other deterrence strategies include harsher sanctions on the country, which Ms Haley said she would propose in the coming days. "Doesn't mean we're going to do them".

The three-way meeting between Moon, Trump and Abe was held in Hamburg, Germany, where the leaders were taking part in the Group of 20 summit.

Experts who analyzed the trajectory said it could reach Alaska, Slate reported.

Washington has warned it is ready to use force if need be to stop North Korea's weapons programs but the consequences of that could be catastrophic and it prefers global diplomatic action.

US and South Korean forces fire off missiles from the South's Hyunmu-2 Missile System and the US M20 Multiple Launch Rocket System.

North Korea has long called for an end to annual joint exercises between the USA and the South, denouncing the drills as a rehearsal for invasion.
