Restructuring: South-South and South-East governors meet”

Governor Ugwuanyi noted that the two zones are joined by tradition, geography and brotherhood and also by common challenges.

Gov. Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom has been appointed the interim chairman of the joint South-East/South-South Governors' Forum.

Eight governors present at the meeting include: Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), David Umahi (Ebonyi), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa-Ibom), Ben Ayade (Cross River), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), and Nyesom Nike (Rivers).

The Guardian gathered that the meeting, which was the second in less than two months was brokered following the conviction of the governors that the present political arrangement of the country has been skewed against the two zones. Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State had his deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke, stand in for him.

Governors of Edo and Delta states were absent and did not send representatives.

The host governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, in his opening remarks told the governors that there is the need for inter-regional cooperation saying it would help solve developmental issues accord the region.

The Leadership newspaper reported that 11 persons have been confirmed dead in the flood disaster caused by the five-hour downpour in Suleja and part of Tafa local government areas of Niger State at the weekend even as many were injured and also property were destroyed.

"Having reviewed the state of the nation, particularly as it affects us in the South-South and South-East regions, we have agreed to pursue inter-regional cooperation".

"We are also talking about economic survival of the two regions and look at possible ways of bringing our ingenuity and making use of our huge deposit of both human and natural resources to attain economic viable zones in Nigeria".

The governors, in their first meeting in the current dispensation, also resolved "to work together and realign as a people that share common heritage, culture and and affinities".

"There is also need to discuss security, peace and unity of the two regions and find lasting solution to various salient issues that affect our unity in Nigeria".

The source added that the current socio-political trauma in the country, particularly the separatist agitations of some youths of the two regions was something that had occupied the minds of the governors, stressing that while they recognized that each zone was faced with one challenge or the other, they are anxious about the crude dimensions the development had taken.

After this first meeting, the governors also agreed that their next meeting will be held in port Harcourt, Rivers state on August 27.
