True Blood actor Nelsan Ellis dies, aged 39”

Actor Nelsan Ellis, known for his work as an actor portraying the popular character of Lafayette on the vampire drama series True Blood, died due to heart failure this weekend.

According to Variety, Nelsan Ellis was born in 1977.

"Nelsan was a long-time member of the HBO family whose groundbreaking portrayal of Lafayette will be remembered fondly within the overall legacy of True Blood".

He is survived by his grandmother, his father, and his son, Breon, as well as seven siblings. At 17, he joined the Marines, but quit shortly after. After being in the military, Ellis studied at Illinois State University before getting his bachelor's degree at the New York City's Juilliard School.

After landing roles on television shows that included "The Inside" and "Veronica Mars", he was then cast on True Blood, where his role as Lafayette Reynolds garnered him several awards. He recalled how he struggled for his first few years but has credited this struggle to the artist he became. HBO released a statement about his passing. As soon as the tragic news broke, fans and cast mates of Ellis reacted by sharing their condolences and shock on social media. Nelsan's manager, Emily Gerson Saines, later confirmed his death to the Hollywood Report.

"Nelsan has passed away after complications with heart failure", Saines said.

She praised Ellis saying that he was a true talent and brought a lot of joy to the world.
