Anti-G20 activists riot overnight in Hamburg

Anti-G20 activists riot overnight in Hamburg”

Almost 500 police officers were injured in clashes with protesters during the G20 summit, officials said yesterday, after fresh riots broke out overnight.

Hamburg's police president Ralf Meyer told reporters at a news conference that while he was proud of the 20,000 police officers who managed to provide security for the many worldwide leaders and their delegations, it was deplorable that so many of them were injured and that the violent riots couldn't be prevented.

Protesters gathered after the close of the summit in the Schanzen district, a stronghold for extreme-left radicals which has been the site of multiple confrontations since Thursday.

Police used water cannons and pepper spray against the crowd, while protesters set up barricades and threw objects and set cars ablaze. Officials say 476 officers have been injured in the violence since Thursday. The clashes left scores of protesters arrested and injured, as groups from across Germany and global organizations protest the G20 summit.

New clashes erupted Sunday morning in the streets of Hamburg after the end of the G20 summit, protesters torching in particular of vehicles, has announced the police on Twitter.

He dismissed criticism by some peaceful demonstrators that the police had been excessive in their crackdown and called for "lengthy jail sentences" for participants in the riots.

The summit, which took place on Friday and Saturday, was hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Hamburg, a vibrant port city, is a citadel of anti-capitalist radicals and authorities had always been bracing for possible violence on the sidelines of the summit.

"Explained that the US must fix the many bad trade deals it has made".
