Ohio Man Conspired To Support Terrorists And Paid To Have Judge Murdered”

"This defendant conspired to attack our service members overseas as well as a judge in Toledo", acting U.S. Attorney David A. Sierleja of the Northern District of OH said in a news release.

They are charged with conspiring to gather money and equipment and other support to Anwar al-Awlaki, the late American-born, radical Muslim cleric whose English language videos and blog posts inspired a number of Western recruits to al-Qaida, as well as acts of terrorism, federal prosecutors said.

He allegedly arranged for the money to be paid through his wife, a US citizen, in Chicago, according to the indictment.

OH resident Yahya Farooq Mohammad has admitted he conspired to give money to Al-Qaeda and later tried to solicit the murder of the United States federal judge who presided over his case. "He is a unsafe criminal who deserves a long prison sentence".

The case against Mohammad's three suspected associates, including his brother, is pending.

Defense attorney Thomas Durkin pointed out that the plea agreement was "not a cooperation agreement", meaning Mohammad will not be required to testify at the trials later this year of his co-defendants.

In court, Michael Freeman, an assistant U.S. Attorney, said Mohammad told a fellow inmate at the Lucas County jail in March, 2016, that he was willing to pay $15,000 to have Judge Zouhary killed.

Yahya Farooq Mohammad, 39, admitted to conspiring with three associates to provide $22,000, equipment and "other assistance" to Al-Awlaki in 2009 "to support violent jihad" against USA troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, according to a Justice Department press release. He had been introduced to the undercover agent by another inmate at the Lucas County Corrections Center in Toledo. Using the agreed-upon code, Mohammad told the UCE he wanted to have Judge Zouhary killed. When asked when he wanted the murder committed, he replied: "The sooner would be good, you know", according to court documents.

"If I agree to this, you will be removed and never allowed under any conditions to return", Chief Judge Edmund A. Sargus, Jr., of the Southern District of OH, told Mohammad. Through a family member, Mohammad arranged for the undercover agent to receive a $1,000 down payment. He will then be deported under the terms of his plea agreement, the Justice Department said.

Prosecutors said Mohammad tried to orchestrate the killing of U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary from his prison cell following his arrest in a terrorism case.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Freeman, Matthew Shepherd and Christos N. Georgalis of the Northern District of OH, and Trial Attorneys Gregory Gonzalez and David Smith of the National Security Division's Counterterrorism Section, following an investigation by the FBI.
