United States condemns terrorist attack on Amarnath pilgrims”

Hisar: A Muslim trader from UP has been allegedly slapped by an unidentified person when he refused to raise Bharat Mata ki Jai slogan during a protest by Bajrang Dal activists here against the attack on Amarnath pilgrims, police say.

Dubbing the attack on Amarnath Pilgrims an attack on most fundamental liberties, the White House on Wednesday condemned the attack.

Both The News International and The Express Tribune, two prominent newspapers in Pakistan, did not have any reports on the Kashmir attack in its Tuesday editions. "Nobody could kill Kashmiriyat, I salute our Kashmir people", said 58-year-old Ms Mufti.

The group said India was behind the attack, "to sabotage the freedom struggle of Kashmiris" and fulfill "its nefarious agenda" to crush the popular anti-India rebellion.

The pilgrims were on their way back from the Amarnath shrine deep in the Himalayas when their bus got caught up in the crossfire near the town of Anantnag, police said.

"It's good to see that people of Jammu and Kashmir are together".

The Anantnag attack on the pilgrims came the same day police announced the arrest of an LeT module, which included a Hindu terrorist from Muzaffaranagar in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, as the annual pilgrimage continues, the central government issued the "highest alert" in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday chaired a security meeting with the Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir and Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh in Srinagar after the terrible Amarnath Yatra terror attack.

The ministers visited Srinagar, following a directive from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Such dastardly act should not go unpunished, the chief minister said in a Twitter post. The terror groups had so far spared attacking any pilgrim. The 40-day long pilgrimage will conclude August 7. However, the bus was not part of the Amarnath yatra convoy and was plying after the 7 pm deadline imposed by the security officials on the movement of the yatra vehicles. Though security had been increased along the route for the pilgrimage, the thousands of deployed soldiers and police do not patrol overnight.
