Woolies to remove single-use plastic bags

Woolies to remove single-use plastic bags”

The move will affect Woolworths' two Bathurst supermarkets where shoppers will either need to bring their own bags to the shops or pay for thicker, reusable bags at the checkout.

Single-use plastic bags will phased out from Woolworths Group stores Australia-wide by July 2018, the company said on Friday.

"We now give out more than 3.2 billion lightweight plastic bags a year and hence can play a significant role in reducing overall plastic bag usage", Mr Banducci said.

The decision from Woolworths means that supermarkets in all other states will also stop providing free plastic bags over the next 12 months.

The grocery giant now hands out more than 3.2 billion lightweight plastic bags a year to customers, and says the decision meant Woolworths was taking its environmental responsibility seriously.

"This announcement by Woolworths shows they are serious about their responsibilities as one of Australia's largest supermarket chains", Wockner said.

Instead customers would be offered a range of reusable plastic bags to buy, except at Big W where customers may be given free reusable bags.

"Our team continues to work hard to minimise our impact on the environment through the minimisation of food waste, ethical and sustainable sourcing, and reduction in energy use".

The decision will apply in states that are yet to legislate against single-use plastic bags - New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia.

Greenpeace's "Ban the Bag" campaign attracted nearly 100,000 signatures in its effort to cut down on the estimated 50 million plastic bags that end up in Australian waterways each year.

BIG W customers may be given re-usable bags at no extra cost Banducci said.

Mr Banducci said plastic would be used less across all parts of the business, not just at the cash registers.
