Civilian Deaths Up Sharply Under Trump in War on ISIS

When President Obama was about to exit the Oval Office, I wrote here at Rare that his drone warfare is an indelible black mark on his legacy. As I noted then, drone hits were never the "surgical" procedure Obama made them out be, and the Obama administration's Orwellian rules for classifying civilian casualties in drone strikes and us military intervention in the Middle East more broadly allowed Washington to massively downplay a shockingly bloody record of innocents killed. After he became President, Trump ordered the formation of a new battle plan against ISIS.

More than four times the number of civilians have been killed per month in USA -led airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria since President Donald Trump took office compared to when Barack Obama was in the White House, the Independent reported on Monday.

Independent analysts estimate that more than 2,200 civilians have been killed in coalition strikes in the nearly six months since Inauguration Day, compared to the approximately 2,300 civilians killed in the nearly two-and-a-half years that the Obama administration led the battle against the terrorist group, according to research done by the military tracking group Airwars.

According to the report, this strip-down of protections for civilians in battle zones "represented a major shift from decades of US military doctrine, which has generally made central the protection of civilians in war".

The Coalition's own confirmed casualty numbers - while much lower than other estimates - also show the same trend.

At least 2,200 civilians are estimated to have been killed up until July 13.

Despite the praiseworthy aspects of former President Barack Obama, his abysmal record concerning civilian casualties in wars overseas, as well as his broad use of drone strikes and other legal methods of war meant that he will be long-remembered, not as the "hope" and "change" president, but one who helped to further ISIS's agenda by breeding an entire new generation of terrorists. By contrast, the Obama administration oversaw 2,300 civilian deaths in total over eight years.

That is beyond appalling.
